The "Great" Ashoka and Buddhism

Ashoka , known to be one of the greatest kings of India, has many theories and anecdotes running around him. One of these is that the great king adopted Buddhism after waging war against Kalinga and killing thousands of innocent women and kids in it. A movie based on Ashoka, made by Shahrukh Khan, also depicted the same. This same fact remains in almost all of the textbooks. But does this represent truth? Historical facts say not so much. When asked by people as to why and over what facts NCERT had mentioned that Aurangzeb granted funds to build temples NCERT drew a blank face. The same situation lies in almost of these left peddled facts and figures put up in NCERT textbooks. Let us now have a look on to the fact of embracing of Buddhism by Ashoka.
