śrī gaṇapati atharvaśīrṣa
oṃ namaste gaṇapataye| tvameva pratyakṣaṃ tattvamasi|
tvameva kevalaṃ kartā’si|
tvameva kevalaṃ dhartā’si|
tvameva kevalaṃ hartā’si|
tvameva sarvaṃ khalvidaṃ brahmāsi|
tvaṃ sākṣādātmā’si nityam ||1||
Meaning:
Salutations to Ganpati. (Namah te - salutations to you / nā mahah, te - not me, YOU).
You alone are the manifestation of supreme consciousness.
(tvam eva - you alone, prati akshham - in front of eyes, tattvam - truth/reality, asi - are)
You alone are the doer.
(kevalam - only, kartaa - doer)
You alone are the sustainer.
(dhartaa - sustainer/maintainer)
You alone are the destroyer.
(hartaa - destroyer)
You are verily this assuredly absolute Brahman.
(sarvam - everything, khalu idam - all of this indeed, brahma - absolute conciousness/truth)
You are verily the eternal self.
(sakshad - before the eyes, pratyaksh; aatmaa - soul; nityam - eternal)
ṛtaṃ vacmi (vadiṣyāmi) || satyaṃ vacmi (vadiṣyāmi) || 2 ||
Meaning:
I speak the divine law.
(rtam - divine law, vacmi - I speak)
I speak the divine truth.
(satyam - truth)
ava tvaṃ mām || ava vaktāram || ava śrotāram ||
ava dātāram || ava dhātāram ||
avānūcānamava śiṣyam ||
ava paścāttāt || ava purastāt ||
avottarāttāt || ava dakṣiṇāttāt ||
ava cordhvāttāt || avādharāttāt ||
sarvato māṃ pāhi pāhi samaṃtāt || 3||
Meaning:
Protect the speaker, the listener, the one who gives (this upanishad) and the one who supports, the one who teaches(guru) and also one who learns (disciple) and everyone (you and me).
(ava- protect, tvam - you, maam - me, vakta - speaker, shrotaa- listener, daata - giver (seer), dhaata - supporter, anuuchanam - well versed in vedas (teacher), shishyam - disciple)
Protect from behind, from front, (east and west), from north and south, from above and below and from everywhere. Protect me equally from everywhere.
(pashcaat - behind, puraha - front, dakshin - south, uttara- north, taat - from
cha - and, urdhva - above, ardharaat - below, sarvataha - everywhere, maam - me, paahi - protect
samantat - equally on all sides)
tvaṃ vāṅmayastvaṃ cinmayaḥ ||
tvamānaṃdamayastvaṃ brahmamayaḥ ||
tvaṃ saccidānaṃdādvitīyo’si ||
tvaṃ pratyakṣaṃ brahmāsi ||
tvaṃ jñānamayo vijñānamayo’si || 4||
Meaning:
You are the vaak (naadah brahma) manifested. You are the absolute awareness (cinmayah), absolute bliss (anandamayah).
You are the the supreme brahman. You are the sacchidananda - the supreme bliss attained only by the siddhas. You are the manifestation of non-duality (advitiyosi - na dvitiyo advitiyo).
You are the one true Brahman before our eyes (pratyaksham brahmasi).
You are the manifestation of wordly knowledge (gyaanmayo) and you are the special (vishesha) knowledge beyond the world. (vigyaanmayo - vishesha gyaan)
sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvatto jāyate ||
sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvattastiṣṭhati ||
sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvayi layameṣyati ||
sarvaṃ jagadidaṃ tvayi pratyeti ||
tvaṃ bhūmirāpo’nalo’nilo nabhaḥ ||
tvaṃ catvāri vākpadāni || 5||
Meaning:
The entire (sarvam) universe (jagad idam) is born (jaayate) from You (tvattah).
The entire universe is sustained and maintained (tisshthati) by You alone. The entire universe dissolves (withers) (layameshyati) back in You.
The entire universe merges (prati- towards, eti - approaches) back into You.
You manifest as the land, water, fire, wind and ether all the five elements as You please. (bhumi- land, aapo - water, analo - fire, anilo - wind, nabhah - ether/space)
You are the four (chatvari) levels/steps (padaani) of speech (vaak, i.e, vaikhari, madhyama, pashyanti and paraa).
tvaṃ guṇatrayātītaḥ tvamavasthātrayātītaḥ ||
tvaṃ dehatrayātītaḥ || tvaṃ kālatrayātītaḥ ||
tvaṃ mūlādhārasthito’si nityam ||
tvaṃ śaktitrayātmakaḥ ||
tvāṃ yogino dhyāyaṃti nityam ||
tvaṃ brahmā tvaṃ viṣṇustvaṃ rudrastvaṃ
indrastvaṃ agnistvaṃ vāyustvaṃ sūryastvaṃ caṃdramāstvaṃ
brahmabhūrbhuvaḥsvarom || 6||
Meaning:
You are the beyond the three qualities (gunas - sattva, rajas and tamas). You are beyond the three state of awareness (avasthaa - jagrita, svapna, susupti).
You are beyond the three layers of body (deha - sthula, sukshma and kaaran) and time (kaala - bhuta, vartmaan and bhavishya).
You always (nityam) abide (sthitaha asi) in the Mulaadhaara (root chakra).
You are the embodiment of three forms of energies (shakti - iksha, kriya, and gyaana)
The yogis (yogino) always meditate (dhyaayanti) upon You.
You are Brahma, You are Vishnu.
You are Rudra, You are Indra.
You are Agni, You are Vaayu.
You are Surya, You are Chandra.
You are Brahma.
You are the plane of existence/ physical plane (bhuu), the mental plane (bhuvaha), the spiritual plane/ plane of conciousness (svaha).
You are OM.

evaṃ dhyāyati yo nityaṃ sa yogī yogināṃ varaḥ || 9||

etadatharvaśīrṣaṃ yo’dhīte || sa brahmabhūyāya kalpate ||
sa sarvataḥ sukhamedhate || sa sarva vighnairnabādhyate ||
sa paṃcamahāpāpātpramucyate ||
sāyamadhīyāno divasakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati ||
prātaradhīyāno rātrikṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati ||
sāyaṃprātaḥ prayuṃjāno apāpo bhavati ||
sarvatrādhīyāno’pavighno bhavati ||
dharmārthakāmamokṣaṃ ca viṃdati ||
idamatharvaśīrṣamaśiṣyāya na deyam ||
yo yadi mohāddāsyati sa pāpīyān bhavati
sahasrāvartanāt yaṃ yaṃ kāmamadhīte
taṃ tamanena sādhayet || 11 ||
anena gaṇapatimabhiṣiṃcati sa vāgmī bhavati ||
caturthyāmanaśnan japati caturthyāmanaśnan sa vidyāvān bhavati|
sa yaśovān bhavati ||
ityatharvaṇavākyam || brahmādyāvaraṇaṃ vidyāt
na bibheti kadācaneti || 12||
yo dūrvāṃkurairyajati sa vaiśravaṇopamo bhavati ||
yo lājairyajati sa yaśovān bhavati ||
sa medhāvān bhavati ||
yo modakasahasreṇa yajati
sa vāñchitaphalamavāpnoti ||
yaḥ sājyasamidbhiryajati
sa sarvaṃ labhate sa sarvaṃ labhate || 13||
aṣṭau brāhmaṇān samyaggrāhayitvā brāhmaṇān
sūryavarcasvī bhavati ||
sūryagrahe mahānadyāṃ pratimāsaṃnidhau
vā japtvā siddhamaṃtro bhavati ||
mahāvighnātpramucyate || mahādoṣātpramucyate ||
mahāpāpāt pramucyate||
sa sarvavidbhavati sa sarvavidbhavati ||
ya evaṃ veda ityupaniṣat || 14||
|| śānti maṃtra ||
oṃ sahanāvavatu || sahanaubhunaktu ||
saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai ||
tejasvināvadhītamastu mā vidviṣāvahai ||
oṃ bhadraṃ karṇebhiḥ śaṛṇuyāma devā |
bhadraṃ paśyemākṣabhiryajatrāḥ ||
sthirairaṃgaistuṣṭuvāṃsastanūbhiḥ | vyaśema devahitaṃ yadāyuḥ || oṃ svasti na indro vṛddhaśravāḥ | svasti naḥ pūṣā viśvavedāḥ || svastinastārkṣyo ariṣṭanemiḥ | svasti no bṛhaspatirdadhātu || oṃ śāṃtiḥ | śāṃtiḥ || śāṃtiḥ ||| || iti śrīgaṇapatyatharvaśīrṣaṃ samāptam ||
